Subic Bay
The former US Naval base of Subic Bay makes for a superb escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The town is a tranquil and very clean place, closely guarded and regulated to keep things just perfect for those in search of repose.
It’s a varied place too. Needless to say, the beaches here are spectacular. There’s plenty of duty-free shopping, and it doesn’t fall short on the wining and dining side either. But the other great thing Subic Bay has to offer is its backdrop. Wildlife and natural wonders abound in the surrounding hills, which are full of great eco tourism and adventure opportunities.
WHAT TO DO
The town is laid out using a US- style grid system, so it’s really easy to find your way around on foot, and it’s certainly not congested. A stroll around the historic sights is well worth it – with the Spanish Gate and its churches offering a glimpse back into the region’s long and troubled history.
There’s plenty of shopping and dining opportunities around town, too. Along the seafront are numerous bars and restaurants with live bands, and local and international food. This is definitely the place for a great night out.
In town you’ll find other great restaurants – including Xtremely Xpresso, which serves up great coffee, wine, snacks and Italian dishes. The one- metre round pizzas are a sight to behold.
The beachfront is clean and peaceful, and there are plenty of water sports options to be found, although day excursions are the way to go for more adventurous activities.
Subic is a very active place and is great for cycling, hiking, and jungle activities. Ten minutes by taxi will take you to the jungle-clad hillsides around “Bat Kingdom”. Here literally thousands of bats can be seen, just hanging out. It’s truly fascinating to learn about these nocturnal creatures.
Combine this with some jungle hiking to native villages and you have the perfect eco and cultural adventure, which could also spill over into a full-blown jungle survival experience with resident natives. If it’s an adrenaline rush you’re after then the same hillside is home to the Subic Treetop Adventure, an extensive network of canopy walks, bungee jumps, tree swings and other opportunities to catapult into the forest canopy – a guaranteed thrill!
WHERE TO STAY
On the whole, Subic is not a budget destination – a fact that’s reflected in its hotel standards. There are many great luxury and boutique hotels in town, with the Lighthouse being a classic place to stay. Away from the seafront, the Subic Bay International Hotel offers reasonable rates. For genuine escapism, head to the Forest Hills, where you’ll find lodging options ranging from budget-priced former military bunkers to tranquil apartments.
