BASE CAMP
Sunshine Coast
Wondering which beach is best for you? Here’s a map to guide you
MOOLOOLABA
For magnificent, long beaches with amazing surf and a trendy town with shopping malls and a heaving party scene, head to Mooloolaba and its adjacent beaches, Alexandra Headland and Maroochydore. Behind the holiday apartments facing the beach, you’ll find camping grounds, backpacker hostels and canal villas.
NOOSA
Located about two hours’ drive from Brisbane, Noosa is the ritziest beach on the Sunshine Coast. Its main street, Hastings Street, parallel to Main Beach, is overflowing with cafés, restaurants and posh boutiques bursting with interstate and international guests. But it does have a relaxed side. Bypass the beachfront and stay at the sleepier inlet called Noosaville.
CALOUNDRA
Sleepier than its northern counterparts, Caloundra is the ideal spot for families to drop anchor for a week or two. Home to many longer-term holiday rental apartments, you have a choice of beaches to suit your mood and budget: Kings Beach is the main surf beach, Moffat Beach and Dicky Beach are a beacon for surfers, Bulcock Beach is a calm water beach and Golden Beach is calmer and quieter still with views across the Pumicestone Passage.
